concern(concern可数吗)

Grade inflation--the gradual increase in average GPAs(grade-point averages) over the past few decades—is often considered a product of a consumer era in higher education, in which students are treated like customers to be pleased. But another, related force—a policy often buried deep in course catalogs called "grade forgiveness"—is helping raise GPAs.。
Grade forgiveness allows students to retake a course in which they received a low grade, and the most recent grade or the highest grade is the only one that counts in calculating a students overall GPA.
The use of this little-known practice has accelerated in recent years, as colleges continue to do their utmost to keep students in school (and paying tuition) and improve their graduation rates. When this practice first started decades ago, it was usually limited to freshmen, to give them a second chance to take a class in their first year if they struggled in their transition to college-level courses. But now most colleges save for many selective campuses, allow all undergraduates, and even graduate students, to get their low grades forgiven.
College officials tend to emphasize that the goal of grade forgiveness is less about the grade itself and more about encouraging students to retake courses critical to their degree program and graduation without incurring a big penalty. "Untimely," said Jack Miner, Ohio State Universitys registrar,"we see students achieve more success because they retake a course and do better in subsequent courses or master the content that allows them to graduate on time."
That said, there is a way in which grade forgiveness satisfies colleges own needs as well. For public institutions, state funds are sometimes tied partly to their success on metrics such as graduation rates and student retention—so better grades can, by boosting figures like those, mean more money. And anything that raises GPAs will likely make students—who, at the end of the day, are paying the bill—feel theyve gotten a better value for their tuition dollars, which is another big concern for colleges.
Indeed, grade forgiveness is just another way that universities are responding to consumers expectations for higher education. Since students and parents expect a college degree to lead to a job, it is in the best interest of a school to turn out graduates who are as qualified as possible—or at least appear to be. On this, students and colleges incentives seem to be aligned.
精读讲解第四段①College officials tend to emphasize that the goal of grade forgiveness is less about the grade itself and more about encouraging students to retake courses critical to their degree program and graduation without incurring a big penalty. ②“Ultimately,” said Jack Miner, Ohio State University’s registrar, “we see students achieve more success because they retake a course and do better in subsequent courses or master the content that allows them to graduate on time.”
段落结构:第①句话站在学校领导的角度继续阐述了分数宽恕的目的(the goal)第②句话引用人物说的话进行举例论证①College officials tend to emphasize that the goal of grade forgiveness is 。
less about the grade itself and more about encouraging students to retake courses
> without incurring a big penalty.这句话当中有两个结构需要注意一下:1critical to..graduation在这句话当中充当后置定语,修饰前面的courses相当于前面省略了which/that are(retake courses which/that are critical to...graduation)
2less about...and more about...less A more B在这里可以理解为更多的是关于B,而不是关于A这里的more/less about是对某事的特征或性质的重要性进行描述。
The purpose of college education is less about preparing students for a job 。
and more about instilling in them the way to think critically.
be more of A than B在对电影战狼进行评价时,外刊上出现过这样一句话:Wolf Warrior is more of a patriotic movie than an action film.
Environmental protection is more of a public issue than a government responsibility.
与其说环境保护是政府的责任,倒不如说是每个人的责任incur(to lose money, owe money, or have to pay money as a result of doing something。
)招致,遭受文中的penalty(处罚)就是一种金钱的损失【常用搭配】incur costs/expenses/a lossThe company has incurred huge losses over the past three years.
②"Ultimately," said Jack Miner, Ohio State Universitys registrar, "we see students achieve more success because they retake a course and do better in subsequent courses or master the
content that allows them to graduate on time."registrar 教务主任注意这里的content是个不可数名词,表示书中的内容,也就是知识点或考点参考译文。
”第五段①That said, there is a way in which grade forgiveness satisfies colleges’ own needs as well. ②For public institutions, state funds are sometimes tied partly to their success on metrics such as graduation rates and student retention—so better grades can, by boosting figures like those, mean more money. ③
And anything that raises GPAs will likely make students—who, at the end of the day, are paying the bill—feel they’ve gotten a better value for their tuition dollars, which is
another big concern for colleges.
让学生学有所值①That said, there is a way in which grade forgiveness satisfies colleges own needs as well.。
that said(used for adding an opinion that seems to be the opposite of what you have just said, although you think both are true
in which和that两种形式这句话中的in which也可以改成that最后一段的第一句就出现了另一种形式way that②For public institutions, state funds are sometimes 。
tied partly to their success on metrics such as graduation rates and student retention—so better grades can, <
by boosting figures like those>, mean more money.
其中动词boost的逻辑主语为better grades,也就是better grades boost figures like thosebe tied to与...
相关的短语还有be related to,be linked to,be associated with,be connected withtied to中间加了一个。
表示一系列数值或指标由后面的graduation rates(毕业率)也可以推测出来,metrics表示跟数值有关的意思retention(the ability to keep students from leaving a school。
③And anything that raises GPAs will likely make students—who,, are paying the bill—
feel theyve gotten a better value for their tuition dollars, which is another big concern for colleges.
这里如果不用两个破折号,改成逗号的话,就成了make students, who,at the end of the day, are paying the bill, feel...
at the end of the day(used for saying what you consider is the most important thing about a situation after thinking about it
Many have voiced concern over the proposed changes in the law.。
The trip was cancelled because of concerns about safety.C His only concern is to study abroad.。
D 关心He showed a complete lack of concern for the childrens welfare.
第六段①Indeed, grade forgiveness is just another way that universities are responding to consumers’ expectations for higher education. ②Since students and parents expect a college degree to lead to a job, it is in the best interest of a school to turn out graduates who are as qualified as possible—or at least appear to be. ③On this, students’ and colleges’ incentives seem to be aligned.
①Indeed, grade forgiveness is just another way that universities are responding to consumers expectations for higher education.
We must dispose of garbage in a way that is conducive to environmental protection.。
在这句话中,that作后面定从的主语,因此不能被替代成in which②Since students and parents expect a college degree to lead to a job, it is 。
in the best interest of a school to turn out graduates who are as qualified as possible—or at least appear to be. ③On this, students and colleges
incentives seem to be aligned.be in someones (best) interest(s) (=bring an advantage or benefit)
Shanghais recent move to enact trash-sorting rules is in the public interest.。
turn out(to produce something, especially in large numbers)大量产出外刊中还会经常出现一个类似的表达:churn out大量炮制(通常指粗制滥造)。
Some property developers have churned out houses susceptible to natural disasters like flood and earthquake.
If you dont speak Chinese, you are not qualified to demand a second discussion.incentive[ɪnsentɪv]
sth that encourages a person to do sth)align[əˈlaɪn]使一致根据这一段第①句的respond to和第②句的in the best interest of可以大致推测出来,这个词表示“统一/一致”的意思。
